Notes:

We have not determined whether the Belmont family of Alzey, a named adopted around 1800 is related to the Alzey family who originated in Porugal. According to different sources, the Belmonte family is a Portuguese-Dutch Marrano family who traces back to Don Iago y Sampayo. In 1510 King Manuel of Portugal gave the city of Belmonte to Iago and allowed him to take its name. The question is whether t he Belmont family of Alzey is the same family. The two spellings are found in both families. The Portuguese Belmonts settled in Amsterdam /the Netherlands. Some of the Belmont-Belmonte families took the name SCHONENBERG or SCHOENBERG; some took JOSEPH or EMMANUEL.

From Familienbuch-euregio website/ and Jewishencylopedia.com

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com 2013, Belmont: Jewish family in Alzey, Rhein-Hessen. It traces its origin to Isaac Simon, who at the end of the eighteenth century took the family name of Belmont. His father, Ephraim Simon (d. 1742), was the son of Joseph Jessel, "Vorsteher der Juden in Ampt Alzey" (d. 1738), who is probably the person mentioned in a document dated 1700 (Löwenstein, "Juden in der Kurpfalz," p. 146). This Jessel was the son of Simhah ben Ephraim (d. 1685), who was buried in Sobernheim. The family was probably the most important Jewish family in Alzey. Isaac Simon Belmont left that city 30,000 florins, 20,000 of which were converted (1790) by his four children into a fund, called the "Belmont Stiftung," for defraying certain congregational expenses and providing dowries for poor girls. A similar "Belmont Stiftung" exists in the city of Mayence. There is little doubt that the Belmont family of Alzey is descended from the Belmontes of Amsterdam. Probably some member of the latter family wandered either from Amsterdam or from Hamburg down the Rhine, ultimately settling in Alzey; and when the Jews were forced by the government to take family names, his descendants revived the name which by tradition they knew to have belonged to their family.

Hayum Lehmann HANAU

M, #I13022

Family

Marriage 1 : Gertrude LORCH m. 1794

Notes:

August Belmont was born in Alzey, Rhenish Prussia on December 8, 1813, a son of a prominent Jewish businessman, learned student of law and government, and President of the Synagogue, Simon Belmont [Schoenberg], and Frederika Elsass.
"Simon's father Aaron Isaac had passed away when Simon was only one year old, and [Belmont's] widowed grandmother, Gertrude, bore another son after her husband's death in 1790. She moved away to Frankfurt, leaving her sons in the care of her father-in-law, Isaac Simon. She re-married Hajum Lehman Hanau, whose sister would soon marry a son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild.
"When August Belmont was eight years old, he was sent to Frankfurt to live with his grandmother, Frau Hanau, whose husband was connected to the vast Rothschild empire established in London, Paris, and Vienna as well as throughout Austria and Germany. The five Rothschild brothers were reputed to constitute the wealthiest family in Europe, and were soon to be given a coat of arms and titles of Baron by the Emperor of Austria."

Finally, the above details makes sense, when compared to the genealogy given in
members.tripod.com/~goldschmidt/hanau.htm
where Belmont's grandmother Gertrude is Gertrude Lorch, re-married in 1794 to Heyum Lehmann Hanau, son of Lehmann Isaak Hanau + Tubche Goldschmidt, with Heyum Lehmann's sister Eva Hanau marrying Amschel Mayer Rothschild in 1796.

Lehmann Isaak Hanau's parents were Isaak Jakob Hanau zum Strauss and Bela Levi, and Isaak Jakob Hanau zum Strauss' parents were Jakob Lehmann Hanau zum Strauss and Sara Kopenhagen. Jakob Lehmann Hanau zum Strauss' parents were
Lehmann (Lima) Hanau zum Strauss and Hindle Brilin, and Lehmann (Lima) Hanau zum Straus' parents were Jakob Hanau, son of Benedict of Hanau (m. a Seligman zum grnen Baum) and grandson of Isaschar Beer.

Now, FINALLY, we can accurately map the basic familial ties of the Rothschilds to the Schiffs, Lehmanns, Seligmans, and Kuhns and Loebs, active in US history.
