Testimony Ties Dorfman, Teamsters Cash
October 25, 1985|By Ronald Koziol, Chicago Tribune.

27
KANSAS CITY, MO. - Allen Dorfman, a longtime mob associate who was murdered in 1983 in a Lincolnwood parking lot, virtually controlled all investments made by the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund for at least six years, according to testimony Thursday in U.S. District Court.

Dorfman
s domination of the fund, which at the time had assets of almost $1 billion, reportedly ended in June, 1972, after his conviction on fraud charges. But government prosecutors contend Dorfman continued to exert his influence through some of the fund
s trustees. The pension fund
s assets now total more than $5.7 billion.

William Nellis, an attorney for the Chicago-based pension fund since 1979, testified that while Dorfman was a $60,000-a-year consultant, he was paid all of his expenses and had the use of a private jet furnished by the Teamsters.

Dorfman also was a member and coordinator of seven committees within the pension fund, including one responsible for all investments, Nellis said.

For the last 23 days, the jury has been hearing evidence against nine reputed mob bosses from four states who are charged with conspiring to skim $2 million from the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas and concealing the ownership of the gambling resort.

A part of the conspiracy, prosecutors say, involved the influence exerted by mob bosses on fund trustees so they would have continued access to the fund
s assets.

Dorfman, who would have been indicted in the Stardust skimming case had he not been murdered, was considered the Chicago underworld
s conduit to the fund.

Dorfman also was at the center of evidence presented earlier when prosecutors played more than two hours of tape recordings made from a microphone hidden in a chair in his office.

The date was April 23, 1979, and Dorfman owned a company that was processing claims for the Teamsters Health and Welfare Fund. A reform group had taken over the fund, and the cash flow to the mob had dried up. Dorfman was heard discussing ways to oust the reformers and replace them with corrupt Teamsters officials.

By June 7, 1979, Dorfman learned that he and his underworld colleagues had been the subject of one of the most extensive FBI wiretap operations in history.

Unaware of the microphone hidden in his office, Dorfman talked openly to Sam Ancona, a Kansas City Teamsters official, about the wiretaps.
