Helen Novorr Margolis Cohen, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 25.

Helen was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Dorothy Cumonow Novorr and Michael Novorr. She attended Kumpf Elementary School, Paseo High School, Kansas City Junior College and the University of Minnesota where she was a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority.

Helen married Jack J. Margolis in 1941. They were married for 39 years until Jack’s death in 1980. In 1986 Helen married Samuel Cohen and lived with him in Topeka until his death in 1996.

She was a life member of the Shalom Geriatric Auxiliary, a member of the Menorah Medical Center Auxiliary, Brandeis University Women’s Committee and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah Sisterhood. She volunteered at Shalom Geriatric Center, the Menorah Medical Center Gift Shop, and delivered Meals on Wheels. In her later years Helen especially enjoyed volunteering as a grandmother helper at Leawood Elementary School. She was a former member of Beth Shalom Synagogue and The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah.

Interior design was one of her loves, which she pursued both independently and at Noel’s in Corinth Square. Helen was artistic, creative, fun loving and took a special interest in young people.

She leaves her son, Ron Margolis (Maria Cristina) of Durango, Colo.; daughter, Teri Margolis Cohn (Steve); brother, Howard Novorr (Marge); sisters-in-law, Pearl Novorr, Shirley Novorr, and Jeanette Soble; her three grandsons, Michael Cohn of Brooklyn, N.Y., Daniel Cohn of Oakland, Calif., and Randall Cohn of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, Gerald and Eugene Novorr.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Village Shalom and Sweet Life at Grand Court, Overland Park, for their loving care.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 27, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Village Shalom, Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Isadore Bressel, 90, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, at Kansas City Hospice House.

Funeral services were to be held Wednesday, Dec. 7, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions to Kansas City Hospice House or American Heart Association.

Mr. Bressel was born in Kansas City, attended Kansas City schools and attended two years of junior college.

Smiley, before going to the Army, met his future wife, Marilyn Shankman. While serving in the U.S. Army, he attained the rank of sergeant. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II and was twice a prisoner of war.

Returning to Kansas City after his service, over the years he worked in the amusement industry, a grocery store and a wholesale meat company. He then worked for Hantover Company from 1962 until his retirement in 2002.

Mr. Bressel was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom and B’nai B’rith Lodge #184.

He was an avid sports fan, was a great tennis player, loved golf, especially enjoying the friendship with his buddies.

Mr. Bressel had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor and was a fan of old black and white cowboy movies.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Anna Bresel; his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Bressel, who died March 18, 2011; and a sister, Mollie Rosenberg.

Mr. Bressel is survived by his son, Jerold Bressel, Overland Park; sisters, Marian Poker, Long Island, N.Y., and Shirley Blank, Green Bay, Wisc.; granddaughters, Jenna Bressel, Chicago, Ashlee Bressel, Kansas City, Mo., Brooke Bressel, Chicago, and Ali Stark, Chandler, Ariz.

His greatest love was his family, his wife Marilyn, his son and his grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staffs at Kansas City Hospice House and The Sweet Life for all their wonderful care.
