Notes:

DEATH CLAIMS BAER AARON, 82.
Noted for Aiding Needy All Over World
A "Good Samaritan," a man who spent the last years of his life in aiding unknown friends in Palestine and the Near east will be will be buried Wednesday in B'nai Jacob cemetery.
He is Baer Aaron, 82, former sexton of the B'nai Jacob synagogue, who died Tuesday at 6 p.m. at his home, 1581 Jackson street. Rabbi Samuel Cooper and Cantor A.B. Freedman of the synagogue were to conduct the services there at 2 p.m.
Mr. Aaron, a native of Russia, came to the United States in 1912 to be with his son, Louis Aaron. Soon after he came to what he learned to describe as the "land of bountiful gifts which has been blest by God," he began sending packages of food and clothing to families in Europe and the Near East.
His son recalls that his gifts of clothing made a wedding possible in Palestine when the bride to be found the dress could serve her for her wedding gown. Others gifts of food and clothing have found their way to Latvia, remote hamlets in Russia, Smyrna and Palestine. Mr. Aaron's only reward was the knowledge he had that he had helped someone.
Surviving, in addition to Louis Aaron, are the widow, Mrs. Rachel Aaron; three other sons, Albert, Herbert and Charles Aaron; three daughters, Miss Anna Aaron and Mrs. David Ogrin, all of Charleston, and Mrs. Joseph Drasnin of Los Angeles, and seven grandchildren.

Charleston Department Store turns 90
Family-owned business celebrates milestone birthday Saturday with sales, show and food
by George Hohmann
For the Daily Mail
The Charleston Department Store will celebrate its 90th birthday Saturday with sales in every
department, a Brighton Jewelry Trunk Show, and cake and refreshments for all.
Established by the Ogrin family and still closely held, Charleston Department Store now has
two locations. The main store is at 1661 W. Washington St. on Charleston's West Side. The
University Shop is in the shops of Trace Fork, off Corridor G in South Charleston.
The business has succeeded by focusing on niche markets:
It was one of the first stores in the 1980s to feature products licensed by West Virginia
University and Marshall University . With the opening of the University Shop at Trace Fork in
2008, the store laid claim to having the largest selection of licensed WVU products in the
state.
It is widely known for its big-and-tall clothing department.
Charleston Department Store also features name-brand casual clothing, including one of the
largest selections of denim in the Kanawha Valley ; a large casual shoe department; an NFL
shop; and a strong ladies' department.
David Ogrin, an orphan from Ukraine who immigrated to the United States in 1918, established
the business. He gained U.S. citizenship by enlisting in the American army in World War I.
After he got out of the military he established the business - originally named Charleston
Street Department Store - on what is now West Washington Street in 1921 . He died shortly
thereafter from injuries sustained in the war.
David's son, Mel, ran the business from the late 1940s until 1990, and Mel's son, Barry , has
carried on the business since then.
In a 2001 interview, Mel Ogrin pointed out one advantage of being locally owned: "In order to
have a board meeting, all we have to do is have a dinner. We're completely flexible. We can
move on a dime where large
corporations are stagnant."
Over the y ears the Ogrins have taken advantage of opportunities their big corporate
competitors could not see from afar. This is perhaps best illustrated by their occasional foray s
into locations where attractive real estate becomes available and the market warrants.
Over the y ears they 've had branch stores in Liberty Square in Teay s Valley , in Southridge
Centre, and in the Kanawha Mall, now known as The Shops at Kanawha.12/13/13 Charleston Daily Mail - Obituary
www.charlestondailymail.com/Business/201111160233?display=print 2/2
Barry Ogrin said in a prepared statement, "The continued success and following we have in the
valley has been amazing to me, considering all of the additional stores we now compete with.
"We continue to thrive by taking care of our customers; we're small enough to be flexible to
change when fashions and markets change; but large enough to have a presence in providing
quality products that our customers appreciate.
"We're also fortunate to have great employ ees that have been with our company for many
y ears," Ogrin said. "They know their customers well and understand their needs."
