Food suppliers go hungry after topping area business

Rob RobertsStaff Writer
Businesses that fill America's breadbaskets and grocery carts have long been a staple of Kansas City commerce.

Two such businesses, Farmland Industries Inc. and Milgram Food Stores Inc., ranked No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, on the Kansas City Business Journal's first list of the area's largest private employers in 1982.

But 25 years later, those companies and drug wholesaler McPike Inc., which ranked No. 6, have said "Bye, neighbor."

Milgram's, known for its "Hi, neighbor" slogan, was the first to go. In 1984, it sold its 36 supermarkets, three dairies and distribution center to Hazelwood, Mo., wholesaler Wetterau Foods Inc.

It was the second time the Milgram family had said good-bye to the Kansas City market.

Stuart Wien, Milgram's chairman at the time of the Wetterau sale, said his father-in-law, Nat Milgram, launched the original Milgram's chain with one tiny store in 1913. After expanding the chain to more than 30 stores, the Milgram family sold in 1928 to Kroger Co. Nat Milgram went to work at Kroger as a vice president but left in 1932.

That year Nat launched Milgram Food Stores, which posted $220 million in sales in 1982.

In its heyday, Wien said, Milgram's operated 61 stores, having purchased 31 in Arkansas, Oklahoma and southern Missouri in 1968.

A typical Milgram's supermarket at the time was about 20,000 square feet -- tiny by today's standards. But many of the communities the chain entered in 1968 considered Milgram's stores too large.

Therefore, several of those stores were closed or sold by the time Wetterau approached the Milgram family with its buyout offer.

"Everybody in the family that owned stock approved of the sale (to Wetterau) for their own reasons," Wien said.

But Wien has often wondered what would have happened had the company hooked up with one Arkansas-based businessman who loved the Milgram's concept.

In the 1970s, Wien said, Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton paid a visit to Milgram's Kansas City headquarters.

"He had gotten interested in our stores," Wien said, "and he wanted to know if we wanted to put a Milgram's alongside every new Wal-Mart store."

Wien and Morrie Shulkind, general manager of Milgram's at the time, listened with interest. But in the end, Shulkind decided the offer was "just more than we could handle," Wien recalled.

In 1985, a year after the Milgram's sale, McPike Inc. was bought by FoxMeyer Corp., one of the nation's largest wholesale drug distributors.

McPike's founder, Raymond Stenzel, was born in Olmitz, Kan., and began operating distribution companies in Kansas City after moving his family here in 1942. By 1982, sales from McPike's distribution center at 1315 N. Chouteau Trafficway had grown to $160 million, making it an attractive acquisition target.

Through a series of acquisitions, FoxMeyer boosted its annual sales to $1.5 billion by 1986. But 10 years later, the Texas-based drug company filed for Chapter 11 and was bought for $400 million by McKesson Corp.

Closer to home, Kansas City-based Farmland Industries Inc. filed the largest bankruptcy case in local history in 2002, despite $11.8 billion in sales the previous year.

Staggered by an agricultural recession and plummeting fertilizer sales, the co-op was pushed into bankruptcy by early redemption demands from its subordinated debt holders.

Farmland, the largest farmer-owned cooperative in North America, was subsequently liquidated.
