Notes:

From "Kansas City Genealogist", Vol. 32, No. 2, pages 80-83, "Excerpts From the Life of Abraham Denebeim", written in April 1927 for his family:
I was born in 1854 in Lubova, Suwalk, Russia-Poland, the son of Moses Meyer and Hannah Deneb
eim, the grandson of Sammy and Badona on the father's side, and Lab and Sarah on the mother'
s side, and the great grandson of Hirsch and Bessie on the father's side and of Saul and Rach
el on the mother's side. I was the second child in a family of seven. At five I was taken to school, covered with a Talis which was a custom of the day and was taught Hebrew. My father died at the age of thirty five when I was twelve, leaving a fair estate. I quit going to school and attended to the estate. Mother married Mr. Friedman who lived a few doors from us.
By the age of sixteen I had begun to study how to leave the country, for at the age of twenty-one I would have to enter the Russian army to serve many years in hardship without pay. On my way to consult an uncle who lived in the country about my affairs, I was met by a Russian officer who questioned my age, and not being processed with a passport, was arrested. That evening the sheriff came and recognized me as he was a friend of my father's. He released me. I knew then that it was time to leave that country for America, though I feared being caught on the Russian-German line. The departure had to be in silence. When I crossed the border I felt like a bird out of a cage, free from the Russian government. I traveled with two companions from the same town. It was a terrible trip on steerage and took seventeen days. We landed in
I left New York with one of my companions for Utica, New York where he had two uncles peddling with sacks on their backs. They persuaded me to stay in Utica, started me out with a basket of notions to go from house to house and sell them. It was my first time in life to start to make money for myself and in the first house my sale was five cents. I made three cents on the deal. My day's sales amounted to thirty-five cents.

I left Utica for Evansville hoping to find my uncle, who would employ me and teach me business. To my sorrow I found my uncle a poor country peddler. He taught me how to go in the country with a pack on my back from farm house to farm house to try to sell the wares. I had to ask for lodging when five o'clock came for it was distant from one farm to another, the country wooded and towns very far apart, that it would be difficult to get a place to stay over night. The first year of my hard work and saving I accumulated five hundred dollars. I walked miles in order to save a dollar. Then comes a letter from my brother, that he wants to come to the United States, so he arrives and starts the same work as I do. On the third year I received a letter from my mother that she became a widow from her second husband, that he didn't leave her any funds and that she has a child and my own sister and they needed support. I immediately sent them some money and asked them to prepare to come to the United States. I bought a house with an adjoining lot for them and when they came to the United States, my mother, brother and I and the sisters had a home comfortably furnished and happy. However, every time I would leave with that pack on my back my mother would cry because I had to travel in the winter through cold and snow. So, I bought a horse and wagon and this made her feel better. I traveled with a horse and wagon, bought up produce in exchange for merchandise, but still a great deal of hardship that every night a fellow would have to find a new place to stop and few farmers could accomodate a stranger and slept some nights on the outside.
I then rebelled against the peddling, although I was making money and decided to open up a s2 CONC mall store so I could have every night the same place to sleep. I related the story to a mer2 CONC chant from whom I was buying merchandise and he promised to back me.
My brother and I entered into a partnership. I was to stay in the store and he to peddle i n the country. My first store was in Rockport, Indiana and was successful in a small way

2 CONT An uncle on my father's side visited me and persuaded me to get married. He said that he kn

2 CONT
2 CONT Competition in business started to be very keen, also sickness of my mother for not being ab

2 CONT
2 CONT I was blessed with a first born son, June 1, 1877, (note: Meyer A. Denbeim). I then added o

2 CONT
2 CONT On March 3, 1879, I was blessed with a daughter (note: Rickey Denbeim), and on March 3, 188

2 CONT We were living happy and healthy and in 1889 I was blessed with a son. In 1890 I was blesse
