Joseph J. Singmon, 93, of Overland Park, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2,
2011, at Village Shalom.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Yukon Chapel, with burial following at the cemetery.

Mr. Singmon was born April 15, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Wolfe and Rose Singmon.

He owned Valentine Super Market on Summit Street and in Martin City. After his retirement, he worked at the Alameda on the Plaza as a cashier in the coffee shop.

Mr. Singmon was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Shalom. He studied with Rabbi Gershon Hadas, was mentored by Cantor Rothblatt and participated in the choir for 55 years.

He was a graduate of Central High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from The University of Kansas.

During WWII, Mr. Singmon served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in finance, stationed in Dalhart, Texas. Mr. Singmon received his Eagle Scout with Troop 61 and he was later an assistant Scoutmaster. He was a member of the Shriners and Masons.

Mr. Singmon was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Esther Singmon, in 2005. They were married on Sept. 7, 1941. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Leona Fink.

Mr. Singmon is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law: Susan and Ernie Rosenthal, Overland Park, and Lynette and Kent Larson, Vienna, Va.; grandsons and their wives: Dr. David Rosenthal and Rabbi Cara Weinstein Rosenthal and Daniel and Janna Rosenthal; great-grandchildren: Emma, Benjamin, Sara and Eliezer. Nieces and nephews also survive. Family was the most important aspect of his life. His other loves were music and travel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Beth Shalom Synagogue or Village Shalom.

Funeral services, 10:30 am Sunday, The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue; burial Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers; the family suggests contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom or Village Shalom. Mrs. Singmon, a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, graduated Paseo High School. She was very active in the family grocery, Valentine Thiftway, while raising two daughters. She was certified in the operation of the comptometer, the predecessor of today’s computer. Mrs. Singmon was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue and its Sisterhood; as well as Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women. She was also a life-long member of the Amicians, an organization for Jewish high school girls. She is survived by her husband of 64 years Joseph, of the home; daughters and their husbands: Susan and Ernie Rosenthal, Leawood, KS, Lynette and Kent Larson, Vienna, VA; grandsons and their wives: Dr. David Rosenthal and Rabbi Cara Weinstein Rosenthal, Roslyn Heights, NY; Daniel and Janna Rosenthal, Germantown, MD; brother: Samuel Rosen; brother-in-law: Sam Gottlieb, both of Overland Park, KS.; sister and brother-in-law Miriam and Harry Friedberg, Tulsa, OK. She was preceded in death by her sister: Pearl Gottlieb. Her marriage and family were the focus of Esther’s life.

Mr. Shalinsky died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Overland Park, Kan.

He was born July 14, 1920, the son of Herman and Freda Shalinsky. He attended Lowell Grade School and Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, Kan., and graduated from the Kansas City (Mo.) College of Pharmacy in 1943.

Mr. Shalinsky joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and served in World War II. He was a navigator of a B-17. He spent the last 11 months of the war as a prisoner after being shot down over Germany.

After the war, he served in the Air Force Reserves for 27 years, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He owned pharmacies in Wyandotte and Johnson counties from 1954 to 1989, and was active in the American Stroke Foundation, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Eight Air Force Historical Society and Jewish War Veterans. He supported Chabad House and Torah Learning Center.

He married Anne Shabson in 1947. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Audrey Shalinsky, Laramie, Wy., and Devorah Leah Shalinsky, Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Barry, Lawrence, Kan., and St. Louis; two brothers, Joseph and Leo, both of Prairie Village; and three sisters, Zelda Goodman Tasman and Harriet Waldman, both of Louisville, Ky., and Eleanor Rutlader, Kansas City, Mo.

The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor's choice, sent in care of Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave., Kansas City, Mo. 64131
